Romaric recalled being a kid standing on the pier waiting for his dad to get home from work on the ferry. Depending on the water, the ride took ten minutes from shore to shore. Standing here now waiting for the ferry to approach brought back the old excited feelings. Romaric’s heart thumped against his chest at the sight of Penelope Poppy James. He hadn’t seen her all day, and this strange feeling had him wondering if she still liked him. What did he care? Why did he care?

His mother’s words this morning bothered him. Given the fact he never thought he’d fall in love with someone, let alone so quick, he wasn’t sure what he felt. All Romaric knew was he didn’t want to mess things up. When he spotted Bren coming up the walkway without Poppy, he wanted to choke his brother. But he couldn’t. As far as their mother knew, Poppy and Farrah were still staying in his cottage while Bren stayed over at the main house. It felt juvenile to hide the truth from her. Lying was something his brothers may have tried back in high school. Living on an island was not the ideal place to try to sneak girls on and off the property. The small neighborhood they lived in consisted of staff, the family homes, a few shops, and a filling station. None of the operations were open in the wee hours of the morning when his brothers tried sneaking their girlfriends off.

Eyes locked on Poppy, Romaric took the sight of her in. She’d changed from this morning into a one of those rompers women wore. The long sleeves belled at her wrists while the shortness of the bottoms exposed her long thick legs. Romaric licked his lips. In the shuffle of shoulders, he barely heard the apologies from the staff and few family members leaving the island. Eyes focused, Romaric gripped the stalks of purple flowers he grabbed off his beach before he hopped on his powerboat to pick her up. He should have had his assistant tail Poppy for safety reasons. She wore her hair natural, but anyone could still recognize her and try something. Maybe kidnap her. It wouldn’t have been the first time for the Charmants to face an abduction.

Poppy’s tortoise-shaped eyes widened even more at the sight of him. She picked up her pace, making her way through the departing people. For all the anticipation he had for this moment, Romaric stopped short, the tips of their shoes meeting. He was so focused on seeing her, he hadn’t thought about the next step. This was unchartered territory for him.

“Hi.” Poppy broke the silence between them.

A smile tugged at his mouth. The simple word seemed so much more, especially since their first meeting was wordless. He shoved the flowers toward her chest. “These are for you,” he said with an awkward smile. She held a few bags in her hand, which Romaric took from her.

“They’re beautiful.” Her lashes fluttered closed when she lifted them to her cute little nose.
